2nd Grade Library Curriculum
By the end of second grade, students should be able to:
Second grade activities may include:
- Choose leisure reading material of interest
- Use a “stick” or shelfmarker correctly while browsing for book
- Identify each of the following parts of a book and use them to find information:
- cover, spine, call number, barcode, title page, table of contents, glossary, index, copyright date, captions, author, illustrator,
- Locate and use the Online Public Access Catalog – the OPAC
- Find the shelf in which any particular picture book belongs
- Demonstrate understanding of nonfiction section – organized by subjects and numbers
- Locate picture book, fiction, nonfiction, magazine, and reference sections of the library
- Produce a project which represents information learned through research
- Demonstrate understanding of beginning research materials
- Dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus
- Extract needed information from a print or computerized encyclopedia article
- Demonstrate understanding of how to take care of a book, both at home and at school
- Demonstrate understanding of digital citizenship
Second grade activities may include:
- Story time
- Book Check Out
- Creative dramatics
- Craft projects related to books and authors
- Independent reading time
- Library Centers
- Author studies
