3rd Grade Library Curriculum
By the end of third grade, students should be able to:
Third grade activities include:
- Use the OPAC to find a book using the title, author, or subject
- Choose leisure reading material of interest
- Find a book on the E, FIC, or NF shelves using the call number.
- Identify picture book, fiction, nonfiction, magazine, and reference sections of the library
- Locate information in each of these sources:
- print encyclopedia, electronic encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, thesaurus
- Use a teacher or librarian-selected internet site to find information
- Identify each of the following parts of a book and use each to find information:
- title page, copyright page, table of contents, index, captions, glossary
- Produce a project which represents information learned through research
- Take notes from books and internet sites and create a bibliography
- Demonstrate understanding of how to take care of a book, both at home and at school
- Demonstrate understanding of various fiction genres: realistic, historical, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi
- Demonstrate understanding of digital citizenship
- Demonstrate understanding of folktales:
- Fairytales, myths, legends, fables

- Storytelling
- Library Centers
- Creative dramatics
- Craft projects related to books and authors
- Independent reading time
- Book Check Out
- Author studies
