By the end of first grade, students should be able to:
First grade activities may include:
- Choose leisure reading material of interest
- Use a “stick” or shelfmarker correctly while browsing for book
- Demonstrate understanding of how to take care of a book
- Identify each of the following parts of a book and use each to find information:
- Cover, spine, call number, barcode, title page, table of contents, glossary, index, captions
- author, illustrator, fiction, nonfiction
- Cover, spine, call number, barcode, title page, table of contents, glossary, index, captions
- Recognize and define the terms:
- Locate the Online Public Access Catalog – the OPAC
- Find the shelf area in which any particular picture book belongs
- Identify picture book, fiction, nonfiction, and magazine sections of the library
- Be aware of the fact that information is available in many forms:
- book, computer, magazine, etc.
- Demonstrate understanding of digital citizenship
- Demonstrate understanding of fairy tale elements
- Read a variety of fairytales
- Demonstrate understanding of beginning research materials
- Dictionary, encyclopedia
First grade activities may include:
- Story time
- Book Check Out
- Creative dramatics
- Craft projects related to books and authors
- Independent reading time
- Author studies
