5th Grade Library Curriculum
By the end of fifth grade, students should be able to:
Fifth grade activities may include:
- Use the OPAC to find a book using title, author, or subject
- Choose leisure reading material of interest
- Find a book on the E, FIC, or NF shelves using the call number.
- Seek and locate information in each of these sources:
- print and online encyclopedia, atlas, dictionary, thesaurus, almanac
- Take notes from books and internet sites and create a bibliography
- Identify each of the following parts of a book and use each of them to find information within the book:
- title page, copyright page, table of contents, glossary, index
- Produce a project in which students present information learned through research
- Demonstrate understanding of how to take care of a book, both at home and at school
- Demonstrate understanding of various fiction genres: realistic, historical, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi
- Demonstrate understanding of digital citizenship
Fifth grade activities may include:
- Literature appreciation
- Storytelling
- Library Centers
- Creative dramatics
- Craft projects related to books and authors
- Independent reading time
- Book Check Out
- Author studies
